Study abroad from Canada: the UK, Europe and the Caribbean

Canadian students choose the UK for shorter degrees, world-renowned universities and specialist programmes such as law, while Caribbean medical schools offer a route to becoming a doctor. EduQuantica helps you compare options and apply, free of charge, with your counsellor meeting you by video call.

Why Canadians study in the UK

  • Historic, respected universities with degrees recognised by Canadian employers and graduate schools
  • Shorter programmes — most bachelor's degrees take three years and most taught master's degrees one year
  • Familiar systems — English-language teaching and a legal system Canada shares roots with
  • Specialist subjects such as law, business, the creative arts and international relations
  • Free admissions support from a London team that meets you by video call at times that suit Canadian time zones

Shorter degrees, lower total cost

Because UK degrees are shorter, you pay fewer years of tuition and living costs than on many Canadian or US programmes. A one-year master's means you are back in work sooner, and a three-year bachelor's saves a full year of study. You also specialise from the start, studying only your chosen subject.

For Student visa applications submitted on or after 30 November 2026, you need to show £1,570 a month for living costs if you study in London, or £1,203 a month elsewhere in the UK, for up to nine months, plus any first-year tuition you have not yet paid. The visa application fee is £558 from outside the UK, and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £776 per year. Our UK cost guide has tuition ranges, living-cost budgets and worked examples.

Using provincial student aid at approved schools abroad

Canada Student Financial Assistance can be used for full-time study at many universities outside Canada, as long as the school is designated for student aid. You apply through the student aid office of the province or territory where you live, and each one sets its own rules on which schools, programmes and costs it will fund. Check your province's rules early, as approval can take time. Find out more at canada.ca student aid.

We help you confirm that your shortlisted universities are designated before you apply.

Studying law in the UK

Many Canadians study law in the UK, either through a three-year LLB or a two-year graduate-entry LLB if they already hold a degree. If you plan to practise in Canada, the Federation of Law Societies' National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) assesses foreign law degrees and tells you which exams you must pass. Check the NCA's current requirements before you choose a course, and we will help you find programmes that suit your plans.

Medicine in the Caribbean

Caribbean medical schools follow a North American-style curriculum and offer a route to becoming a doctor for students who want an alternative to highly competitive Canadian medical schools. Our partners include:

  • Saba University School of Medicine
  • Medical University of the Americas
  • St. Matthew's University

Licensing rules for practising in Canada are set by each province, so check them carefully before you apply. Your counsellor can explain the admissions process for each school.

UK Student visa basics for Canadians

Canadian citizens need a Student visa for a UK course longer than six months. For a short course of up to six months you can usually study as a visitor, with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). As a Canadian national, you don't need to prove your English for the visa or take a tuberculosis (TB) test, and you don't usually need to upload bank statements. You will need your CAS and any documents listed on it, and you will pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Check the full, current requirements on the GOV.UK Student visa page before you apply.

Most students on a degree-level course can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time in official vacations. After you graduate, the Graduate route lets you stay and work in the UK for at least 18 months. Check the current rules on the GOV.UK Graduate visa page.

Do I need bank statements or an English test for the visa?

As a Canadian citizen, you don't usually need to submit bank statements with your Student visa application, and you don't need to prove your English for the visa.

Who needs to show maintenance funds and prove English for a UK Student visa
Your nationalityBank statements (maintenance funds)Prove English for the visa
CanadaNot usuallyNot needed
  • "Not usually" for bank statements means your nationality is on the UK's differential evidence list. You don't need to upload bank statements with your visa application, but you must still have the money for your tuition and living costs, and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) may ask you for evidence after you apply.
  • Already in the UK? If you have held a valid UK visa for at least 12 months when you apply, you don't need to prove your funds, whatever your nationality.
  • English for your university is separate from the visa. For degree-level courses, your university assesses your English to at least CEFR level B2 and may still ask for a test such as IELTS, even if the visa doesn't.
  • Other ways to prove English include an English GCSE or A-level, a UK degree, or a degree taught in English that Ecctis confirms is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree.

Check the official lists on GOV.UK: money you need for a Student visa and knowledge of English.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Canadian student loans to study in the UK?

Often, yes, if the university is designated for Canada Student Financial Assistance. Each province sets its own rules, so check with your provincial student aid office.

Do Canadians need IELTS for UK universities?

Usually not. Canadian nationals don't need to prove their English for the UK visa, and most universities do not ask native English speakers for a test.

Do Canadians need to show bank statements for a UK Student visa?

Not usually. Canada is on the UK's differential evidence list, so you don't normally upload bank statements, but you must still have the funds and UKVI may ask for evidence.

Can I practise law in Canada with a UK law degree?

Many Canadians do, after an assessment by the National Committee on Accreditation and passing the exams it sets. Check the NCA's current requirements before you apply.
